The beach was wonderful, not too much variety with the buffet options, the Restaurant reservations were not available and don't bother visiting during the Sprink break. All the water sports and activities are canceled due to a law that does not allow the Jet ski rentals or even horseback riding rentals during Spring break.

We experienced the disappointment of being downgraded due to overbooking. Initially, the front desk did not handles the situation very well, but we finally spoke to the individual in charge of room allotments and she kindly explained the problem and our downgrade. Other than that, the staff at the hotel are very friendly and helpful. The food was or average quality, but we understand the selection is for the masses. The drinks were extrememly watered down and the domestic wine sour, but this did not deter us from having an enjoyable vacation. The water sports equipment is in need of upgrading too, but all worked fine. We loved Puerto Plata and if we ever went back, we'd probably look into the Riu Merengue again.

Just got back from a three day stay at the riu merengue I must say it was over all very good. Checkin was a breeze the staff is very courteous I would recommend having lunch at the riu bachata also the snack bar n the pool activities at the riu bachata r far better. Make sure you tip the staff as they appreciate it. The TVs in the room are old school. Food was not bad but the liquor is cheap but that's how it is at the resorts. I m a ny dominican so I guess it made it easy fir me to blend in and I never got hassled to buy any timeshares as mentioned in other reviews. For the price it was worth it. This is an older riu hotel chain. The riu mambo is a lower class than the other two.

After a Groupon deal on another Puerto Plata resort fell through (Viva Wyndham Tangerine unexpectedly wanted to charge double for a stay during Christmas week), we settled upon Riu Merengue for our Christmas on the Beach. Everything happens for a reason -- Riu Merengue was one of the most beautiful resorts we've ever seen, set in an undisturbed tropical paradise. The best part is that it is the only resort around, about a half hour in the opposite direction from the airport as all the other resorts in Puerto Plata (Riu is set west of the city, whereas the others are in the east in crowded Cabarete and Sosua). Venture out into the water on a boat or kayak and the resort disappears amongst the palm trees: The tallest buildings are the two-floor villas in which the rooms are set, eight rooms to a building, which gives it a more intimate, village-style feel than other resorts. The rooms were adequate, but we didn't spend much time in them (the full-bottle mini bar was an added plus though). I highly recommend an upgrade to an ocean-view room, which was a negligible extra fee. Our room had its own private patio just steps from the beach -- sizable enough for ten people, although we were three -- where we often sat to watch the ocean, the birds and the people go by (we even had our own banana tree). As for amenities: The food was fairly average resort fare, although there were more choices than in other resorts we've stayed in. I was disappointed at the "restaurants," which were merely smaller buffets in different parts of the resort offering somewhat different food than the main, giant buffet. Actual restaurants would have been nice. The bars were great, and the drinks were not weak if you knew what to ask for, plus the bar staff were full of energy and kept the nights moving. The entertainment was really first-class, with nightly shows on a full-size stage featuring upwards of two-dozen talented dancers -- everyone loved it, and the shows were packed every night. The po

Standards are lower in the Dominican Republic and once you understand that, all will be well. This resort is really three-in-one, though I am not sure what the differences are. Plenty of room to roam and eat and drink. Lots of beach and sun and sand. The snack food is not that great, but always available. If you can speak the language and venture out on your own, you will save tons of money on tourist stuff. We would stay there again.

My husband and i had an amazing 2night 3day stay. The room was clean and comfortable, although i could have used an extra comforter because i got cold in the middle of the night, could have asked for one but thought they would have provided one in the closet, the food was pretty good too. The staff were great, very personable and extremely funny. Enjoyed the entertainment on Thursday night, Wednesday was a little boring. Just don't understand why some guests had bracelets and others did not, & why they don't have a spa inside the hotel. Would definitely go back!

| Stayed at Riu Bachata in Nov 2010 and decided to try Riu Merengue in Sep 2011.
The 1 common problem between the 2 is that if there is torrential rain as is common in the Caribbean and you need to get from reception to your room and you don't have an umbrella, you are soaked!
Booked 2 separate rooms in Riu Merengue. One was fine, the other smelled musty as soon as I walked in. The AC did not work well at all and after complaining to the front desk for a day, a guy showed up the next day, adjusted the thermostat, saying it'll work fine but it never did!
Spoke with reception at checkout about my AC not working properly for my entire stay but it appeared that she wasn't too concerned about my stay at the hotel.
As a side note, the in-room bar with dispensers was removed. Only a fridge with complimentary beer, water, etc remains. I have no idea if this has also been removed at Riu Bachata.
The food, as in Riu Bachata was above average and plentiful. Wait staff at the restaurant was very friendly and helpful. |

Appart from one of the beds missing one leg, lol, and the a/c unit dripping and flooding the room (which was fixed inmediately), the only BAD thing is the food, dont bother waking up early to make reservations for the a la carte restaurants, it is a waste of your time, food is worse than the buffet food, because all inclusive hotels cook large amounts of food, the flavor is almost not present. Staff is very friendly, didnt like the disco and you have to pay fro drinks, but overall it was OK.
